BMX in VTX
David Garcia and John Hampton are a rare breed in Victoria, Texas - they are BMX riders. The friends push each other to jump bigger gaps and take higher hops on their custom built trick bikes."If he does it, I kind of have to," Garcia said.
Hampton has been riding for about 15 years and despite injuries and a comeback from retirement he maintains, "I still got tricks though." He was first drawn to riding bikes because, "When you're a little kid, bikes are like instant freedom. You can go anywhere."
Garcia wants the BMX community in Victoria to grow but for that to happen bikes need to be officially accepted at the skate park, he said. Other skaters are fine with bikes in the park, Garcia said. "As long as we don't get in their way, they don't get in our way, we're all good friends," Garcia said.
"If anything, I want them to at least allow bikes here. That's all I want, I just want to be allowed in there." Garcia or Crazy Dave as he is known, likes to inspire the younger kids who hang out at the skatepark to work hard on their chosen sport whether it be skating or riding BMX. "It inspires little kids. They're like, 'Oh my God, you're so good,'" his voice rising an octave or two to imitate a young voice.
The extreme sport mentality of thrill chasing is strong with Garcia and Hampton. "I want to do stuff that scares me, that makes me really feel like I've achieved something," Garcia said, adding later, while looking at the billowing clouds during sunset, "I just want to ride the sky."
