Ellicott City: Looking Forward After Flood

I spent some time reporting and photographing the recovery effort after the Ellicott City flood on July 30, 2016 that devastated the historic downtown area, killing two. The effects downstream were stark as well with stormwater bringing sediment and eroding the banks of an already fragile Patapsco River.

Oyster Restoration in the Chesapeake Bay

A growing group of people in Maryland and all along the Chesapeake Bay are growing oysters in buckets off of their docks in order to be transferred to sanctuary reefs, where harvesting is prohibited. They do this in hopes of allowing the simple creatures to perform their simple function of filtering the water for nutrients and creating a kind of infrastructure that prevents shoreline erosion and creates a buffer from storms.
